Why do we always extend warm hugs and provide comfort to our close friends in need, but end up getting angry at ourselves or end up questioning the negative feelings time and again. Do you also find yourself struggling with this?

Compassion is extending love and building a safe space for someone who is having a rough time mentally or emotionally and when we extend the same compassion towards ourselves, it goes a long way in making us feel secure and loved! 

I have often found it difficult to extend a safe space for myself because I always believed in “Perfectionism” and when I felt low, I was very harsh on myself. I would end up working out for hours or drown myself in studies until years later I realised that it didn’t change a thing and that’s when I dropped the idea of chasing “Perfectionism.”

Here are some tips for self-compassion

  • Extending kindness to oneself: You’re only human and sometimes you mess up too, and there is nothing wrong in it! Extending kindness can go a long way.
  • Journaling: Whenever you feel uncomfortable and anxious, try to write down your thoughts in order to let it out on a paper.
  • Try to practice Meditation for 10 minutes everyday. This helps you to concentrate in the present moment and it’s a great way to calm yourself when you’re having a tough time.
  • Practicing Gratitude: No matter what, there are and always will be things to be grateful for, not only does it ground us but also motivates us to look forward
  • Try a new activity! Do you want to Dance it out? Go for it! You feel like going for a long run, what are you waiting for? Indulging yourself in activities is a great way of channelising your emotions! 
  • Never underestimate yourself. We often compliment others in the blink of an eye but always shy away from complimenting ourselves. Do take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come!
